Il-Bulbul Ensemble
Il Bulbul Ensemble is a traditional Middle Eastern classical group, or takht, based in Chicago. We draw our repertoire from the the golden era of Arabic music, which includes compositions by Muhammad Abdel-Wahhab, the Rahbani brothers, Sayeed Darwish and Farid al-Atrash, and pieces performed by Om Kalthoum, Fairouz, Sabah Fakhri, and others. Il Bulbul Ensemble also performs waslas, or sets, of Arabic and Turkish instrumental art music.

Gadjos Dilos and Bulbul Ensemble - read on...

Bulbul performs Arabic classical music- that means beautiful and hypnotic strains of traditional Middle Eastern music with its intoxicating rhythms. This music differs from western classical music in many ways, one of which being that each musician improvises taqsims, with the goal of leading the audience, and the musicians, to a state of ecstasy known as 'tarab'.

Opening for Bulbul is Gadjos Dilos, an orthographically challenged new Gypsy Jazz group in town whose repertoire includes French Gypsy Jazz a la Django and Stephane, Balkan rhythms, old Brazilian sambas from the '30s and more. "Gadjos Dilos" means "crazy strangers" in Romany. Look for guitar, percussion, oud, violin and flute from this group as they make their Chicago debut!
