Nay:
Kim Sopata has studied the Egyptian nay since 2003. Her teachers include Dr. Ali Jihad Racy, Basam Saba, and Dr. Scott Marcus. She received her master's degree in Ethnomusicology with a concentration in Middle Eastern music at Bethel University. In addition to her work with the Bulbul Ensemble, Ms. Sopata is a member of the Mosaic Ensemble and the Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble, which have performed at the White House, the United Nations, the Kennedy Center, Symphony Center (Chicago) and Symphony Space (NYC).
As a classical musician, Ms. Sopata has performed flute with numerous orchestras, including the Milwaukee, Charlotte and Elgin Symphonies, the Illinois and the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestras, the Millenium Chamber Players, and CUBE contemporary music ensemble. She received her Bachelors degree in Flute Performance from Northwestern University. She is also a founding member of the Sapphire Woodwind Quintet, the Avanti Flute and Guitar Duo, and the Lake Effect Flute and Harp Duo. A dedicated educator, Ms. Sopata is the flute instructor at Trinity Christian College, the Metropolis Arts Center, and Notre Dame High School.
